Hey Hey !

You ever tried looking at your phone while lying down and dropped the phone on your face? I usually don’t (lies). I’m just having some trouble cause I gotta keep adjusting the light on the screen. Hopefully I don’t drop the phone again. I want to discuss a topic that is kind of in the spotlight, hair loss. Normally, people lose up to 100 strands of hair per day. Unfortunately, some people lose more strands than normal deeming it hair loss. If you haven’t heard already, Jada Pinkett Smith has opened up about her hair loss issues. In an episode of Red Table Talk, she mentioned a time where she first noticed “handfuls” of her hair in her hands while showering. She talked about how she cut her hair and the real reason for the turbans. I commend her for that. This is a common issue that’s hard to face.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, 80 million American men and women suffer from hair loss. That’s an alarming number of people. For some it’s hereditary. For others it’s due to Alopecia, Hyperthyroidism and other health disorders. According to The Science of Black Hair, our bodies will shift energy from hair growth to critical bodily processes linked to stress. This stress can be from diet, ailments, hormones, age, or everyday life. The hair follicles will respond to the shift by slowing down the rate of hair growth, producing thinner strands of hair. Some strands will even shed. Everyone is going through their own battles. These hardships can be damaging to our hair.
I saw a meme a few days ago about girls who wear wigs. It said something like people think girls have no hair cause they wear wigs, displaying a girl with a wig on. It then revealed the girl who has a lot of hair without the wig on. No shade to her, but some girls do wear wigs cause they don’t have hair. Why does society cause people to feel like they have explaining to do? So what if people like to wear wigs. There’s no need to make people feel bad about what they prefer.
I suffered from mild hair loss after I had my first child. The hair you gain while pregnant does shed tremendously after pregnancy due to hormonal changes. I knew that fact, but that did not make it easier to deal with. I posted a “postpartum” picture to Facebook and you could clearly see that all my edges had vanished and then some. I looked at the pic several times before I finally took it down. I can laugh at that now, but not everyone can laugh at their insecurities. Everyone can’t exude the confidence that Jada Pinkett Smith has to accept that change in her life.
There are things that I like to joke about but hair loss is not one of them. I can’t think for other people. I just wish society didn’t make it so hard for people to feel good in their own skin (sigh). What are your thoughts about hair loss? Please comment below. I would love to hear how you feel. Blessings. 😌

P.S.
I was so insecure about this photo below. I have no makeup or lashes on. It’s important to love yourself  for who you are.

  2. I enjoyed reading your journey;I suffered a major hair loss after a perm.not sure if the chemicals caused it or the fact that my Vitamin d level was low. Many studies suggest that low vitamin D levels can cause hair loss. I did recover from that episode by using an awesome product that my sister invented, however it was a very challenging time. Do you have any suggestions on what hair products I could use for short permed hair?

  3. Nikki, Thanks for sharing , your words are encouraging and I hope that someone who is struggling right now finds this blog helpful. I know that many articles and hair talks are geared towards younger women, but as an older women your hair does not grow as fast, and you do experience hair lost due to hormonal changes, so you mentioning jada, will give all women to a voice regardless of their age to open up. .
    Thanks again
